Renovation of the Dr. Abernathy House

Restoration of the Dr. Abernathy HouseThis project is a complete interior and exterior renovation of the home owned by Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, a significant figure in the civil rights movement.

Dr. Abernathy graduated from Alabama State University in 1950 and later became a Professor of Mathematics and a Dean at ASU.  He and Dr. Martin Luther King organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott and co-founded the American Civil Rights Movement.

Near the close of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, this historic home located at 1327 South Hall Street was bombed along with the church where Dr. Abernathy was serving as pastor.

Today, the home is owned by Alabama State University and will be part of a historic section of campus that includes the home that was the birthplace of Nat King Cole as well as a proposed visitor’s center and amphitheatre.

Renovation of the Historic Dr. David Abernathy House is Complete

We are pleased to announce that we finished the renovations to this historic residence on Thursday, November 18th.

The City of Montgomery is in the process of completing their inspections to issue a Certificate of Occupancy.  Once this is obtained, the Alabama State University will have access to this facility.  It is intended to be used as a tourist attraction for those who are visiting this area and have an interest in historic civil rights destinations.
